Tips on Connecting With Jobseekers

Maximize your time at the career fair! Our goal is to connect you to the greatest number of students and alumni within your target audience. In order to gain visibility, build interest in your organization and prepare students and alumni for meaningful conversations, please take the time to consider these tips:

  • Prepare a team recruiting strategy. Know what your goals are. Is your organization recruiting for full-time, part-time or internship positions? What majors are your organization interested in? Are you a new organization to UC San Diego? Will you need to build brand awareness or are you looking to maintain your presence and visibility at UC San Diego?
  • Choose the right individuals to represent your organization. The ideal career fair team would be comprised of UC San Diego alums, current students working or interning, hiring managers and enthusiastic team members.
  • Prepare your organization’s representatives with talking points about: (1) Your organization; (2) The job description(s) of the position(s) for which you are recruiting; (3) Your hiring procedures/policies. Be sure to prepare pre-qualifying questions for those who express an interest in your company. Lastly, have multiple answers to your questions on hand. Ensure that your representatives are presenting a consistent message; it would be confusing to students if they received conflicting information from multiple recruiters.
  • Prepare students by posting position(s) or scheduling an information session through Handshake. Include a comment in the description informing students that you will be participating in the upcoming career fair.
  • Avoid telling students to “apply online.” If your organization would rather not collect resumes at the career fair, OR if your procedure includes resume collection in addition to an online application, please make these expectations clear. A good practice would be to explain: (1) Why; (2) What your company’s application procedures are, and (3) Why the student’s in-person interaction holds additional value with your company.
  • Get Social. Are there any tips you have for students and alumni preparing for the career fair? Let us know by connecting with us on Facebook or Twitter! #hireucsd #ucsdcareerfair
