Special Tips for Experienced Alumni

Summary:  If you have been out of school and in the job market for some time, you will find these additional tips useful for choosing the type of resume that best showcases your particular skills and experience.

Types of resumes and when to use them
  • Chronological resume.  In this type of resume you present your work history and education according to the time sequence of their occurrence (chronologically).  It provides background information including employers, positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments.  It is best used for those who plan to stay in the same field and/or whose experience is in that field.  See an example of a chronological resume.
  • Functional resume.  In this type of resume, you present information in major categories, or functional areas, of experience rather than chronologically.  Its purpose is to show transferable skills and experience and is often used for those changing fields or for those whose experience has been in a variety of fields.  See an example of a functional resume.
