Marco Rizo

Student Employment Specialist and Reading & Math Tutor Program Coordinator

My role at UC San Diego

I am coordinating the Reading & Math Tutor Program which sends UCSD tutors to schools and community centers all over San Diego County. I also oversee the Student Affairs and Business Affairs departments here on campus and help them with all their Student Employment needs.

My career path

After graduating from UCSD in 08’ I went into the non-profit world for over 6 years at two different organizations; Summerbridge San Diego, Inc. & San Diego Youth Services. At SBSD I was the Associate Director for our 6-week summer program serving under-represented students from Area 1 SDUSD schools and while at SDYS I was the Residential Coordinator for a Licensed Level 12 Group Home for Youth.

The rewards in doing what I do

The biggest reward for doing what I do comes from knowing that the end result from all my efforts goes to benefit students across many different levels. My work with the Reading & Math Tutoring program directly benefits Elementary age students throughout San Diego County academically while helping our UCSD students grow professionally. Also, all the support I provide on-campus departments ultimately trickles down and fosters more opportunities for UCSD student workers.

My words of wisdom to students

“Don’t let anybody tell you no, who can’t tell you yes.” – Kevin Benedicto

In my free time...

I am very big on three things: My Family & Friends, my fraternity Gamma Zeta Alpha, Inc. and Sports. So in my free time you can find me either spending time with my Family & two dogs, hanging out with my Brothers, or watching/playing sports. I’m a die-hard Raiders fan.
