In the session on Designing for Accessibility, Marketing & Communication student staff will highlight crucial aspects of inclusivity in the future of work landscape through media. Recognizing the diverse needs of our audience and community, we will explore strategies to ensure accessibility for individuals with cognitive or learning disabilities, low vision, blindness or color blindness, deafness, and motor impairments.

This discussion will recommend proactive measures aimed at breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive environment in digital media from initial ideation to final implementation. The world of work continues to change at a rapid pace as we see younger professionals demanding remote work and more flexibility. How can we better prepare graduates for the changing economy and give them the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market? Significant job disruption is on the horizon and changing skills gaps will directly impact new graduates entering the workforce. This session will discuss the current trends in remote work for Gen Z, and explore the drivers behind the evolution of jobs and work in the future.  

M'Chelle Ryan  is the Director of Upwork Academy where she creates interactive and innovative education to enable independent professionals to grow and succeed. Before joining Upwork, M’Chelle worked in higher education for 16 years, with a special focus in Career Services and Employer Relations, providing developmental programming for students and liaising with recruiters to engage, and hire, top-tier talent. M’Chelle was most recently at UCLA, moving to the west coast after 7 years working in Employer Engagement at NYU. She is passionate about impacting the future of work and is excited to see the role new graduates will play in shaping the global remote work economy.

UC San Diego’s innovative large language model system, TritonGPT, was developed with a vision to enhance communication and productivity across various departments within the university. Through a meticulous process of data collection, training, and fine-tuning, our team has built a sophisticated system capable of generating contextually relevant and accurate responses. The benefits of TritonGPT to our community are manifold, including improved efficiency in responding to inquiries, enhanced user experience, and the ability to streamline administrative tasks. We believe that other colleges and universities can replicate our approach by investing in data collection, training, and collaboration between technical and subject matter experts to develop their own large language models tailored to their specific needs. Engage in an interactive discussion about innovative approaches to college recruiting practices, job search support, and career readiness approaches that better serve the current and richly diverse generation of students.

Judy Reilly joined the University of Connecticut in 2021 to design, build, and direct a national academic center whose mission is to address the specific challenges and opportunities related to neurodiversity and employment. UConn’s Center for Neurodiversity and Employment Innovation (CNDEI) focuses its work on two primary pillars of the employment ecosystem where change and innovation are critical: 1) Accessible and comprehensive employer education and training, and 2) Innovative employment pathways within (and outside of) the higher education model.

Ms. Reilly is trained in special education advocacy and law, analysis and application of educational and neuropsychological assessments, and the services, supports, interventions, and strengths-based approaches needed to enable neurodivergent children and adults to pursue their goals. She earned her MBA from the University of Michigan in 1995 and serves on the Advisory Board of Vanderbilt’s Frist Center for Autism Innovation. Ms. Reilly is the parent of four adult children, two of whom live with neurodivergent conditions that have significantly impacted their educational and employment journeys. 

Stephen DeStefani currently leads the Enterprise Neurodiversity Program across Wells Fargo. Stephen recently led the development and implementation of an international award-winning technology training platform, the Wells Fargo Technology College. He also delivered strategy and implementation leadership of the firm’s first unified technology skills inventory platform and led the implementation of the Technology DE&I program which included building the operating model and 3rd party partnerships to support diverse talent hiring and skills development frameworks. Stephen is a member of the National Board of Directors for the Autism Society of America, where he co-chairs the Employment Taskforce and he also serves as an advisor to the Mayor’s Office “NYC at Work” jobs initiative. He is also a US Marine Corps combat veteran with service-connected disabilities.

In this talk, we discuss a model for translational education: describing how skills move from theory to practice, classroom to workforce. This model provides a framework for how students, faculty, and administrative leaders can strategically support translational gaps, instill strong technical skills, and optimize resources to increase student success. The focal point of the discussion will look at how the Jacobs School of Engineering is addressing student success using this model and how students and industry can better prepare the future technical workforce.
